What Clinicians Need to Know About Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccination of Adolescents
On April 13, 2021, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a Health Alert Network (HAN) Health Advisory about the Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccine. CDC and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration are reviewing data involving six U.S. cases of a rare type of blood clot in individuals after receiving the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine that were reported to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS). One patient died. CDC recommends pausing the use of the J&J COVID-19 vaccine until the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices is able to further review these cerebral venous sinus thrombosis cases in the context of thrombocytopenia and assess their potential significance.
