Promising Practices in Health Equity: Obesity-Related Risk During COVID-19 and Barriers to Active Living
This content and conclusions are those of the author and presenter and do not necessarily represent the views of, nor should any endorsements be inferred by, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Overview
Obesity is a complex disease with many contributing factors, but Hispanic and non-Hispanic Black adults have a higher prevalence of obesity and are more likely to suffer worse outcomes from COVID-19. In addition, historically some racial and ethnic minority groups have not had broad opportunities for economic, physical, and emotional health, and these inequities have increased the risk of more severe illness or dying from COVID-19. Creating a nation in which everyone has access to safe and convenient opportunities for active living requires teamwork including expertise from those in public health, transportation, planning, business, healthcare, and parks and recreation.
