Static Maps
Maps which are 'view only' with no animation or interactivity. These maps are often created once and are manually and often infrequently updated. Typical map formats found here are JPEG, GIF, PNG, or TIFF for raster files and PDF, SVG or SWF for vector files.
Dynamic and Distributed Maps
Maps created on demand each time the user reloads the WebPages. Some maps are created from distributed data sources. The WMS protocol offers as standardized method to access maps on other servers. WMS servers can collect data from different sources, reprojects the map layers, and send them back as a combined image containing all requested map layers. To view these products download www.google.com/earth.
