CPHP Program activities are categorized into three distinct areas: Education and Training, Partner-requested, and Supportive. In order for an activity to be approved, the CPHP must address certain elements related to the corresponding activity category. Below are descriptions and examples of the three activity categories. Education and Training Activities
The primary focus of CPHP program activities is the delivery of education, training, and dissemination of new information related to enhancing emergency preparedness and response. Preparedness education activities may be either partner-requested based on a community need, or academic or university student-focused. Examples of these activities include: courses, train-the-trainer programs, conferences, workshops, preparedness curriculum development, internships, and training exercises/drills, each of which should be evaluated for instructional effectiveness. All approved education and training should address a need or performance gap identified in collaboration with State and Local public health partners.
Partner-requested Activities (Other than Education / Training)
State and local agency partners and the CPHP mutually identify needs other than education or training that can be met based on CPHP qualifications, expertise, and resources available to commit to the specific activity. Examples of this type of activity include: exercises or drills to assess participants’ knowledge, skills, and abilities to respond; assistance with measuring key performance indicators of public health preparedness; ongoing assessment of workforce education and training needs; and internships, fellowships, and scholarships designed to address public health workforce shortages.
Supportive Activities
Supportive activities are activities needed for general support of preparedness education, outreach, partnerships, and CPHP program evaluation. Other examples of activities include: ongoing enhancement of resources for education or information dissemination; developing publications; convening state and local preparedness partners for on-going planning; and maintenance of learning management systems.
Program Summary
The following summary reflects current program data from approved activities, conducted by CPHPs during FY 2006. CPHPs submit goals for each activity and CDC gauges their progress through semi-annual progress reports.
As of August 31, 2007, the CPHP Program has successfully achieved the following:
- 454 education and training activities have reached over 173,152 learners.
- More than 350 CPHP activities provided preparedness education based on identified community needs of state and local public health and other practice partners.
- 167 CPHP preparedness education programs targeted the specific learning needs of state and local public health workers.
- 65 activities offered preparedness education to graduate and undergraduate students, providing new proficiencies within academic curricula to better enable graduates to meet preparedness challenges needed to enter the workforce.
- CPHPs collaborated with partners on 117 activities that involved planning for and conducting exercises. In addition, 203 pandemic influenza related activities were conducted by the CPHPs, of which 11 involved an exercise in some form.
