Overview:

Recent public health emergencies such as the widespread response to novel H1N1 underscore the importance of preparing for public health emergencies in which multitudes of people will require immediate medical care that will over tax most healthcare systems. Because access to routine medical care is limited by the availability of resources, healthcare systems may need to institute alternate care systems to manage the potential influx of patients. During this call, a CDC subject matter expert and other leading experts will discuss the concept of alternate care systems and crisis standards of care (Institute of Medicine 2009 report, Guidance for Establishing Crisis Standards of Care for Use in Disaster Situations) and why planning for both is critical for a community’s ability to respond to a large-scale disaster, and will highlight how one Ohio county lead the way in community planning for an alternate care system to handle crisis situations.
